INTRODUCTION

Q: WHO CAN APPLY?

A: This course is for young women of colour aged 16 – 30, and aims to give yous a chance to come together and discuss thoughts and experiences of what it feels like and means to be a young woman of colour. By women of colour we mean all non white women, for example south asian, mixed, first nations, black, south pacific islander, latina, roma, asian etc. etc. – all of the many different peoples who are the majority of the world. The aim is to create as safe, friendly and respectful space as possible in all group discussions. To sometimes be serious but always to have fun in the course of a day.

 

Q: WHEN WILL IT BE HELD?

A: Current plans are for courses from the 4th – 28th February 2009, in Glasgow (scotland).

It runs on weekday evenings, Monday to Thursday from 6pm – 8pm at Govanhill  Housing Association, & at 7pm – 9pm when we will be based at the electron club.

There will be private screenings at the CCA on the 6th, 10th & 27th from 7.30pm -  9.30pm, and a public screening of all films completed during the course on the 5th  March.

Ideally you will be able to use some of the daytime on saturdays to work on your film/ make use of the camera equipment/ get advice etc. We will also be based at the electron club during Saturdays.

Q: HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

A: The course is totally free including all material used and subsidised travel is available to  course participants on low incomes. (This means Digital Desperados buys you a bus pass for a month).

 

Q: WHERE WILL IT BE HELD?

The conference hall at Govanhill Housing Association and  at the Electron Club at the Centre for Contemporary Arts. Private screenings will also be held at the CCA. We are based in Glasgow, Scotland.

 

Q: WILL IT BE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE?

A: Yes

 

Q: DO I NEED TO HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE?

A: No. You don’t have to know how to use a computer to do this course or to have used a camera before. The course aims to pass on all the basic practical information you need in order to make your own short film. This means being able to use a camera in order to take film footage of a quality you are happy with and have sound of a reasonable quality. It also means being able to use computer software to edit selected footage together in a way that looks and feels good to you. Making films is like writing books or making pictures in as much as people have their own ideas, styles and opinions about what is best. Digital Desperados aims to encourage participants to explore their own ideas and visions and express them.

 

Q: WHAT WILL THE COURSE INCLUDE?

A: The main part of the course will introduce you to:

*how to use a camera. This part of the course will include storyboarding, sound, lighting etc etc

*how to edit your camera footage on a computer using a program called Final Cut Express for the Apple Mac.
As well as this the course will include a variety of workshops, film watching, time for talking, sharing & developing ideas. Some of the workshop topics will be self-defence, massage (clothed) and d.i.y. women’s health, etc. etc.

 

Q: WHAT WILL I BE LEARNING ABOUT FILM?

A lot of the film included in the course are by or about women of colour. These films are mixture of types of films – stories (feature films), documentaries and experimental genre defying films. We will take these as starting places to explore a variety of topics through shared discussions. Digital Desperados will also provide background information in the form of brief talks and in printed handouts that you can read if you want to. There will also be the opportunity to meet some film makers and talk to them about how they made their films. Here are some of the films that’ll be shown during the course to give you an idea of some of the areas we’ll be touching on RIZE, TRUDELL, CHAIN CAMERA (see links on right hand side)
